Male house guest makes a pass at a housemaid while alone in a hallway. She turns him down flat and later learns he is engaged to the daughter of her employer.

The male protagonist is regularly drunk, very tipsy and has episodes of blackouts. Several times main characters take time to light and smoke a cigarette.
