A major theme of the movie is the psychedelic property of a plant. It is consumed several times according to amazonian ritual. Its effects are only "shown" onscreen once.
Some men are shown smoking hand rolled cigarettes.
A man blows herbal medicine in another man's nose repeatedly at points throughout the movie.
A man laces a cult's sacrament with some sort of hallucinogen. Some are seen acting strange and vomiting. When asked about it he says "I didn't poison them, I made them think better."

There are some really tragic scenes depicting the fallout of colonialism in the wake of the Amazon rubber boom.
Evan and Karamakate stumble upon a cult. Some of the followers wear creepy outfits and worship a delusional messianic figure.
