The Preternatural Research Bureau are called in to investigate when a retired headmaster and his pet dog are found slain. Liz Shaw (Caroline John) is disturbed to find signs of a satanic ritual near to the crime scene. Liz's investigation leads her to the nearby Winterborne School where it appears someone is intent on covering up an ancient secret - at any cost. When another animal is slaughtered, the current headmaster Gavin Purcell (Peter Davison)is accused of murdering a pupil and one of the school's oldest members of staff is stabbed with a knife Liz comes under increasing pressure to solve the case. However, P.R.O.B.E. is facing another challenge as it is threatened with closure and Liz finds herself in conflict with her superiors and even her strongest Whitehall ally Patricia Haggard (Louise Jameson). Things get even more complicated when Purcell reveals that the legendary Devil of Winterborne is at large and that only Liz can stop it.

When corpses are found with internal organs missing, Liz Shaw and P.R.O.B.E. investigate a defunct government project from the 1970s that aimed to predict the course of human evolution. But was the creature it produced really destroyed, or has it resurfaced twenty years on?

The first P.R.O.B.E. adventure sees former UNIT scientist Liz Shaw (Caroline John) dispatched by the Preternatural Research Bureau to investigate a series of bizarre murders. All of the killings have occurred near to a psychiatric hospital that is soon to close its doors. When wealthy industrialist Peter Russell (Colin Baker) suddenly and unexpectedly steps in to save the hospital from closure things get even more complicated for Liz. Are Dr Dove (Sylvester McCoy)the current director of the hospital and his aged predecessor Dr O'Kane (Jon Pertwee) hiding the killer somewhere in the hospital - and what is the secret of room zero?

When Liz Shaw returns from a working holiday in Spain a new and deeply disturbing case awaits. Corporal 7891Alpha has outlived his usefulness or rather the government can no longer afford to fund the medication. And that can mean only one thing... termination! At first glance a 'government authorised execution' is a simple enough task for the Preternatural Research Bureau (PROBE) team. But as events unfold, and the truth about Corporal 7891Alpha is revealed, the case becomes far more complex. Only Liz's wealth of experience, courage and determination can save the day - but not before her her moral compass is knocked off course.
