Mr. Wong Collection

In San Francisco, Simon Dayton, the senior partner in a chemical company, visits famed detective James Lee Wong as Dayton fears for his life stemming from a series of unexplained events in both his personal and professional life. But before Wong can meet Dayton at his office the next morning to follow up, Dayton is found dead in his locked office, the cause eventually discovered to be by poison. Captain Sam Street with the SFPD leads the investigation. The primary suspect is Carl Roemer, the scientist who developed the poison which he accused Dayton of stealing from him as he was never paid for the formula. One of the initial questions is how Dayton was poisoned behind the locked doors of his office. While Street takes the path of least resistance in the investigation in believing Roemer the obvious killer based solely on circumstantial evidence, more thoughtful Wong takes a broader approach in trying not only to discover other suspects, but how whoever the killer was able to administer the poison. Two of those other primary suspects are Dayton's partners, Theodore Meisle and Christian Wilk, who stand to profit substantially from Dayton's death, in addition to Dayton, Meisle and Wilk's many employees and associates. Adding to the investigation is Street's sometime girlfriend, Myra Ross, who nonetheless respects Wong's take on the investigation more than Street's in looking out for the proverbial little guy.

The Eye of the Daughter of the Moon, a golfball sized sapphire has been stolen in China and smuggled into the US. Richards, a rich man who knows a curse was placed on the Eye by the Emperor Hong Chong Tu as he buried it in his dead unfaithful wife's heart, expects to be murdered for receiving it. He shows Mr Wong the Eye and a death threat note. At a party, during a game of "Indications", Richards is shot, seemingly by his secretary, Peter Harrison. Add a peeking Chinese butler and maid, a budding singer, another criminologist, Richards' lawyer and an unsigned changed will. Mr Wong helps Street sort out the details to uncover all the secrets and the murderer.

A pretty Chinese woman, seeking help from San Francisco detective James Lee Wong, is killed by a poisoned dart in his front hall, having time only to scrawl "Captain J" on a sheet of paper. She proves to be Princess Lin Hwa, on a secret military mission for Chinese forces fighting the Japanese invasion. Mr. Wong finds two captains with the intial J in the case, neither being quite what he seems; there's fog on the waterfront and someone still has that poison-dart gun...

When Captain Street's best friend Dan Grady is murdered, Street enlists the help of Chinese detective James Lee Wong. Mr. Wong uncovers a smuggling ring on the waterfront of San Francisco and unmasks the killer, though not until several more murders occur.

Shipping magnate Cyrus Wentworth, downcast over a disaster to his ocean liner 'Wentworth Castle' (carrying, oddly enough, an illicit shipment of Chinese bonds) is shot in his office...at the very moment of kicking out his daughter's fiance Dick Fleming. Of course, Captain Street arrests Dick, but reporter Bobbie Logan, the attractive thorn in Street's side, is so convinced he's wrong that she enlists the help of detective James Lee Wong to find the real killer.

In the middle of a pictorial lecture on his recent expedition to the Mongolian Desert, Dr. John Benton the famous explorer, drinks from the water bottle on his lecture table, collapses and dies. His last words "Eternal Fire" are the only clue Chinese detective Jimmy Wong and Captain Street of the police department have to work on. Win Lee, Benton's secretary, reveals the doctor's dying words refer to a scroll which tells the location of rich oil deposits. Wong and Street then begin the search for the killer among Benton's associates.
